Pongo

Description

Hello, my name is Pongo,

I’m a three month old male Labrador. I arrived at The Mayhew because one of the children I was living with was scared of me.

I’ve been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and I’m now starting to learn lots of good things, I’m starting to get the hang of toilet training because I’m taken out to the garden every couple of hours and given lots of praise when I do my business out there. Like any puppy I’m a bundle of energy and full of mischief. I want to kiss everyone I meet but I’m learning not to jump up and to say ‘hello’ politely. When I ‘puppy mouth’ my carers give a loud yelp and give me a toy to chew instead. I still have plenty of things to learn so I’ll need plenty of time and dedication from my new owners to teach me all the basics and perfect my doggy manners.

I’m now looking for a forever home with someone who is experienced with dogs. They will need to have, as an adult, independently owned dogs before and have plenty of time on their hands to train and socialise me properly so that I develop in to a well rounded adult dog. They will be expected to take me to training classes and provide me with two gentle, thirty minute, off lead socialisation outings per day whilst I’m still young, building up to a minimum of one hour of off lead exercise every day once I’m fully grown. I can live with another grown up dog providing they have been well trained, are calm and will be a good role model for me. I can also live with cats providing my owners are prepared to teach me not to chase them. Due to my very young age and training needs I’ll need to live in either a house or ground floor flat with direct access to a garden, there will need to be somebody at home for most of the day and any children in my new home will need to be at least six years of age and upwards. If you’re interested in offering me a home you will need to be fully prepared for the hard work and long-term commitment involved in caring for a dog, you will be taking on a fifteen year commitment, which must not be taken lightly.

I hope to see you soon,

Pongo x

Dogs are often seen as disposable items, ending up homeless when humans tire of them. In the UK, one unwanted dog is destroyed every hour. Adopting a dog is a commitment that could potentially last the next 15 years of your life. Are you prepared for this?

Listed below are the most common reasons people give up their dogs. Please read through each reason and give your views on each statement.

I would not consider moving home unless I was assured my dog could move in with me. If moving to rented accommodation I would first request written confirmation that pets are allowed on the property.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureIf I was to find myself homeless or needing to move into temporary accommodation I have family and/or friends who would be able to accommodate the dog.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sure If I had to move into smaller accommodation I would not see this as a reason to re-home my dog.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureI would not consider moving to another country if it meant risking my dog’s health or leaving them behind.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureEveryone in my household has spent enough time in direct contact with dogs to ensure they are not allergic.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureI am certain no one in the family has asthma which is worsened by dog fur. *I agreeI disagreeI'm not sure I am as keen as my children are to get a new dog. My reason for getting a dog is not just because my children want one. *I agreeI disagreeI'm not sure I understand I will be legally responsible for the dog. I am fully prepared to carry out the day to day duties should my children’s promise of help fall through. *I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureI am fully prepared to continue caring for the dog when my children leave home or go to university etc.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureIf I am unable to take my dog with me on holiday I will make suitable arrangement for them to be cared for in my absence.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureI'm aware that adopting a dog is a long term commitment, potentially fifteen years. I have thought about the future (holidays, new job, having children etc.) and in any future lifestyle changes my dog will remain a priority.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureIf my dog developed behavioural problems which I felt I was unable to cope with, I would pay for a dog trainer/behaviourist to work through the problems with me and my dog.*I agreeI disagreeI'm not sureI am as keen as my children are to get a new dog.
